Because shea trees grow naturally in Okere, we are deliberate in our efforts to regenerate and conserve shea trees by promoting its re-forestation and sensitizing our community not to cut the trees. We are also investing in shea butter by creating cosmetic products lines to launch in the market place - with the first one being Okere Shea Butter. In essence, we would like to position SHEA BUTTER as the "vibranium" that spurs socio-economic transformation in our village. Among other things, we have started Okere Shea Cooperative Society to be the bedrock upon which our shea investments are rested.

I have fallen head of heels in love with Okere Shea Butter. I cannot look further from it. It is by far the best moisturizer I have ever used. Additionally, the story behind the women who collect the nuts is inspiring. To think that when I buy a tin of Okere Shea Butter, at least some money finds its way to these women and the community is amazing.

OKERE CITY

Okere ‘City’ is a community development project founded to undertake, influence and direct holistic rural development initiatives geared towards the elimination of poverty in Okere Parish, Adwari Sub-county, Otuke District.

The Okere City idea is premised on the belief that using comprehensive and holistic participatory rural development approaches to design and implement community development projects can create catalytic rural transformation and sustainable agrarian reforms.

Environmental Management

We promote environmental conservation and protection through community re-afforestation initiatives.

Community Engagement

We hold community engagements and provide platforms where community members can engage with their local leaders

Early Childhood Development

We started the community school programme with an early childhood development centre because laying a firm foundation is a key pre-requisite for a solid education background

VSLA

We started a VSLA group, comprising mostly of women to fight financial exclusion and strengthen the local economy in Okere

Water and Sanitation (WASH)

We are repairing boreholes, reparing and servicing news, forming and strengthening water management committes to ensure water security in Okere.

Community Sports

We provide sporting facilities and encourage our communities members to actively participate in various sporting activities.

SHEA TREE - "I AM THE TREE OF LIFE"

Our village now has towering billboard. The message on the billboard endears the Okere folks to love and protect their shea trees. The image depicts a talking shea tree. Its reads (translated from Luo): - "My name is shea tree. I plead to you, please do not cut me because I am the tree of life".

okere go-green campaign

Thanks to the Multi-stakeholder Platform on Education and Environment (MPEEN) and National Forestry Authority, we received 3,000 mixed mahogany and mvule trees to make Okere green. This will be an important boost to the Okere Go-Green Campaign where we have already planted 10,000 trees in the past two years. Climate change is real and planting trees is the surest way to fight this environment global threat.
